What came next for Asian Americans was a chance at redemption.
Marvel/Disney followed up with the Netflix original series Iron Fist, the story of a white male trained by, and eventually surpassing, the mystical Asian community that adopted him, ultimately becoming their champion the Iron Fist.
A grassroots movement formed online urging Marvel and Netflix to cast an Asian-American actor as the titular superhero to at least in part correct a legacy of cultural appropriation.
Hopes were high considering they just showed their willingness to deviate from the source material and make changes to a character’s race in Doctor Strange.
Unfortunately Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck wasn’t aware of the fans’ desire to see a non-white actor portray Danny Rand until after they decided to stay true to the source material and cast the titular Iron Fist as a blonde haired, white male played by Finn Jones (Game of Thrones).
“I understood where it was coming from, but we just weren’t thinking in that way, at least I certainly wasn’t. I was just concentrating on the story and who would be a great actor to play this character.”
See Buck undersands. He didn’t when he was casting the role and making the show but now he totally gets it.
As for the original co-creator of Iron Fist, Roy Thomas, well, he had this to say about the issue,
“I try not to think about it too much. I have so little patience for some of the feelings that some people have. I mean, I understand where it’s coming from. You know, cultural appropriation, my god. It’s just an adventure story. Don’t these people have something better to do than to worry about the fact that Iron Fist isn’t Oriental, or whatever word? I know Oriental isn’t the right word now, either.”
See he understands too. He just doesn’t want to think about it or have patience for people’s feelings, but he totally gets it.
They both do. They just didn’t do anything about.
So just get over it and find “something better to do”, cause your hope for an Asian Iron Fist was dead before arrival.
